We rate the FDA Internet sites to give our clients an appreciation of the work required to convert free FDA files into more reliable, reviewed content.

Ratings are based on industry relevant web-site content, ease-of-use, and overall site management. We lower the rating any time FDA overwrites existing Internet files (particularly guidances) for no apparent reason. Design errors round out the remainder of the ranking criteria.

design errors

Excessive Javascripting - Slows page retrieval, causes browser errors, and negatively impacts editing programs.

Excessively Large Files - Slows page retrieval, causes browser errors, and negatively impacts editing programs.

Site Frequently Overwrites Files that are Unchanged - Having no way to know how a file changed, the user must re-download files.

Link errors - Broken links, Dead links (links to nowhere), and noise cause slower than normal loading and errors when pages are incorporated into your intranet.

Browser Incompatibility - Government sites should be accessible by the oldest browsers. Java and advanced slide presentations often do not display on many of the world's PCs.

Poor File Naming - Using spaces as part of a file name will lead to insertion of %20 and -20 characters when files are saved.

Poor File Linking - Web authors should use the actual name of the default index page when creating links. A link to CDER/index.html is appropriate. A link to CDER/ causes the directory to open when viewed off-line.

Unnecessarily Complicated Directory Structure - Three levels deep is sufficient for even the largest sites. More than this is unnecessary and confusing.

Cut and Paste File Creation - Hypertext errors increase dramatically.
