The magicJack Review

We've reviewed hundreds of forum postings about magicJack (and we've used it ourselves for years).

The number one question regarding magicJack…

Should I replace my home/office land-line phone with a magicJack?

We offer the following unbiased review.

There are now 3 basic magicJack products:

  • The original USB device that requires a computer running at least Windows XP and internet
  • The newer magicJack Plus that does not require a computer, but still needs an internet connection
  • The magicJack App that requires an Apple device and service

Good things about the original magicJack:

  • It's clarity approaches a land-line if you have strong broadband service
  • You get a phone number unlike Skype
  • When your computer is off, people will be able to leave you a message that gets forwarded to your email as a wav file
  • It's incredibly inexpensive ($20/year) compared to $400/year for cable's "triple play" bundles or more for land-line service
  • It rarely drops calls
  • You can take it with you to use it with your laptop on someone else's broadband

  • People that complain about magicJack clarity typically have crappy internet service (DSL or other cheap service)
  • People that like the sound quality have good broadband (WiFi works well; an ethernet connected computer is best)

Bad things about the original magicJack:

  • The application will simply shutdown from time-to-time
  • You need to keep a phone attached to it which limits the portability of a laptop/netbook
  • When your internet is down, so is your magicJack

  • The magicJack program on your computer may stop working from time-to-time
  • You can usually restart the program by launching a desktop icon
  • You may have to unplug the device to start again in stubborn cases (about a 2 minute process)
  • You won't miss messages as your voicemail is always up on their server which will forward you an email

Its important to remind you that it costs $20/year (about 5 cents per day unlimited calling).

We laugh when we see someone post a comment saying they will send their magicJack back... claiming they will keep their bundled cable phone service or use their cell phone seemingly unfazed that these services cost over $400.

Good things about magicJack Plus:

  • It's clarity approaches a land-line if you have strong broadband service
  • You get a phone number unlike Skype
  • When your cable or network is down, people will be able to leave you a message that gets forwarded to your email as a wav file
  • It's inexpensive ($40/year)
  • It rarely drops calls
  • You can take it with you

Bad things about magicJack Plus:

  • To eliminate static, you may need to access your network router to open ports for better clarity
  • When your internet is down, so is your magicJack

Good things about the magicJack App:

  • It can be free
  • You get a phone number unlike Skype

Bad things about the magicJack App:

  • The app can be flaky and difficult to remove
  • Clarity is unpredictable
  • That Apple product you're running it on is expensive
